THANK YOU!
Schools should be happy places where our children learn and grow. A survey conducted in 54 schools across Serbia revealed that most children like to go to school. Yet this same survey exposed that 65 per cent of children experienced some form of violence at least once during the last three months – memories, which close to half of these children will remember for the rest of their school years.
That is why UNICEF together with the government and a team of experts developed a comprehensive programme in schools targeting children, their teachers, parents and the entire community to defeat violence together.
The aim of the program is to prevent and decrease violence against and among children and to create a secure and empowering environment for learning and development.
It all starts with education. Through the program members of school community, from teachers and staff to parents and students, gain concrete knowledge on how to prevent and resolve problems of violence when they occur.
The programme aims to increase awareness and motivation but also to influence attitudes towards a zero-tolerance for violence mindset. Participants learn practical communication skills to constructively solve conflicts when and if they occur.
The programme has been implemented in 242 primary schools and 9 high schools across Serbia. Over a quarter million teachers, students and parents have been involved. But this is only 15 per cent of all schools in the country. We still have a long way to go.
The “School without Violence” programme is funded exclusively by donations from private individuals, the corporate sector and local institutions. Financial support is also provided by UNICEF’s National ambassadors – Aleksandar Sasa Djordjevic, former basketball player and Ana Ivanovic, famous tennis player.
